In my experience, here's what happens when you celebrate the good things that come into your life.

You just get more of them.

Now, I could "logicalize" this as to why it happens, but it kind of takes the fun out of the whole thing.

Wherever you are, in your private life or in business, on top of the hierarchy or just beginning to climb up the ladder, you enjoy it when someone tells you "Good job!" But do you also play the reverse game? Do I hear you saying, "Didn't think of it" or "Have to focus on more important things"? With all due respect, you need to think again, because acknowledging a job well done is an incredibly powerful gesture that is greatly underestimated.

Everybody likes being appreciated and there are countless forms to express it, from "That was a great job – thank you!" to a simple, appreciative thank-you note, a little gift, an email after an interesting meeting, an extended birthday card. There are no limits to your imagination.

Allow me to mention two points that are important. Your praise must be honest, genuine and sincere – no phony talk. A snow job, lip service, and flattery get you nowhere and achieve the opposite. And the second point: your praise has to be timely and fresh, soon after the incident has happened. Waiting too long takes much of the power away. And if we say "Good job!" it make us feel good so isn't this another incentive?

How about voicing an unexpected "Thank you!" right now?

Let's say somebody standing next to you is sick as a dog.

Fever, headache, chills, sniffles, coughing, aching - the whole works and then some.

And they happen to sneeze right in front of you.

Not a small sneeze.
A sneeze that can knock down the tree in front of you.

A fine spray of saliva, mucus, and bacteria filling the air.

Now would you immediately stick your head right smack in the middle of all that and inhale as deeply and slowly as you would when smelling a beautiful rose?

That's exactly what people are doing when they hang around with negative people, whether they realize it or not.

Do they think we are stupid?

I just received an email that says: "You have been selected to assist in a stunning money transaction -- you will get 25% of $17 million. All we need is some information and so that we can contact you for the details. Don’t miss this chance of a lifetime." Really? I don't even know who the sender is and he expects me to give him my banking information? Does he think I am stupid?
"Congratulations, you have won $50,000. We need some information so we can wire the money. The faster you answer our questions below, the faster you will get the money. This is not a scam, you can trust us!" Yeah, sure!

I can't imagine that anyone falls for such obvious scams but these eMails keep coming and coming so there must be people out there who -- excuse the expression -- are really stupid. Whatever it is that makes them believe the unbelievable, be it greed, naiveté, or even desperation, they are missing a healthy sense of suspicion, which is a necessary quality today.

These are extreme examples, of course, but in our everyday life we are constantly bombarded with situations where we have to remember that the most important words to read are the ones between the lines

First time i am writing review abt a film..
I usually circulate film review comments thru mails not in blog.. Seeing Raz's blog review abt Vamanan, induced me to post the review..
I wonder how saran directed such a film.. We(Me & husb) expected a lot as it is Saran film.. We watched on the 2nd day of the release of the film.. People were merely laughing each n every scene(Dont dare to think that is due to comedy-nu).. Obviously, due to director's thought in the story..
Dont dare to watch the film, its mere kiddish to see such a film.. Still if u r eager to watch the film, i would request to join only after the intermission,... That too 2 minutes after intermission.. Same old masala stuff in the film.. :))
Do post in ur review if u dare to watch it.. :)))))

THEN think positive about the results.

Edison tried one attempt to invent the light bulb. He failed. Had he thought negatively about the result of his action, he might not have continued but as history has shown, he thought positive.

He told himself he just found one more way NOT to invent the light bulb and that type of thinking helped him to take more action.

Do some action.

Well she did.

She looked toward the future and slowly rebuilt her personal and professional life.

She reconciled with her daughter.

She found a ton of work.

She's not flat broke anymore.

And she also just recently won the Celebrity Apprentice.

She is the one, the only - Joan Rivers.

And if she can come back from something like that, it just goes to show how much potential we all have inside ourselves to bounce back from whatever life throws at us,

Reject rejection!

Remember the last time you felt the sting of rejection? It hurts, doesn't it? It might have been an unreturned phone call, an unanswered email, or an unkind comment. We often take it personally when we don't receive the kind words of appreciation we were expecting. However, ninety-nine percent of the time, it turns out that the person on the other end had no intention of hurting us. It's our own thinking that causes the problem. We become a prisoner of our own thoughts.

Before lashing out in response to rejection, make sure you have the facts straight. Most "rejections" turn out to have just been harmless talk, well-intentioned criticism, or a lack of response because of an email not getting through or an unintentional memory lapse. I learned this the hard way, mind you, but my strategy now is to wait a bit and let my frustration die down.

Then I assume the very best of the other person and try to find out what happened and where things stand between us. Only if the situation repeats itself do I consider moving away from the relationship - a rare event indeed.Is there something you're taking personally right now? Try rejecting rejection instead!

Total listeningFor some of us, listening is the perfect time to plan what we're going to say next. We look them straight in the eyes, nod our head and appear to give them our undivided attention. We deserve an Academy Award for our acting. But as soon as they pause for breath, we start talking about our problems. Not nice, and it will backfire on us, because what we're really communicating is "I am not interested in your problems". Is this really something we want to communicate?

If we really care about others, we should listen to them with open ears and an open heart. By doing so we are silently saying, "What you have to say is important to me, because you are important to me." While I was working on this, I put my total listening idea to the test and was amazed by the reaction. The more I listened, the more comfortable and communicative the other person became - which made me feel very good.

Practice total listening - you will be surprised by the results.

Last spring I was walking in a park. A short distance ahead of me was a mom and her three-year-old daughter. The little girl was holding on to a string that was attached to a helium balloon.

All of a sudden, a sharp gust of wind took the balloon from the little girl. I braced myself for some screaming and crying.

But, no! As the little girl turned to watch her balloon go skyward, she gleefully shouted out, Wow!

I didn't realize it at that moment, but that little girl taught me something.

Later that day, I received a phone call from a person with news of an unexpected problem. I felt like responding with Oh no, what should we do But remembering that little girl, I found myself saying,
Wow, that's interesting! How can I help you

One thing's for sure - life's always going to keep us off balance with its unexpected problems. That's a given. What's not preordained is our response. We can choose to be frustrated or fascinated.

No matter what the situation, a fascinated Wow! will always beat a frustrated Oh, no.

So the next time you experience one of life's unexpected gusts, remember that little girl and make it a Wow! experience. The Wow! response always works

Embracing Imperfection

"When I was a little girl, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. And I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work. On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage, and extremely burned toast in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet all my dad did was reach for his toast, smile at my mom, and ask me how my day was at school. I don't remember what I told him that night, but I do remember Watching him smear butter and jelly on that toast and eat every bite!

When I got Up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad For burning the toast. And I'll never forget what he said: 'Baby, I love burned toast.'

Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if He really liked his toast burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, 'Debbie, your Momma put in a hard day at work today and she's real tired. And besides-a little burnt toast never hurt anyone!' You know, life is full of imperfect things.....and imperfect people. I'm not the best housekeeper or cook.

What I've learned over the years is that learning to accept each other's faults - and choosing to celebrate each other's differences - is the one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.

And that's my prayer for you today. That you will learn to take the good,the bad, and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the feet of GOD. Because in the end, He's the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where burnt toast isn't a deal-breaker! We could extend this to any relationship in fact - as understanding is the base of any relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship!! "

Here's a very simple exercise you can do to bring some relaxation and joy into your life, as well as potentially find out some more things about yourself that you never would've found out before.

Simply write down a list of 10 things that light up your life and commit yourself to doing at least one of those things every day.

It doesn't sound all that earth shattering at first, but give it a try and I guarantee you'll be pleasantly surprised at not only the obvious results, but of the other positive results that unexpectedly arise.

This is a story of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.

"Sensei," the boy finally said, "Shouldn't I be learning more moves?"

"This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you'll ever need to know," the Sensei replied. Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the Sensei took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the Sensei intervened. "No," the Sensei insisted, "Let him continue."

Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament. He was the champion.

On the way home, the boy and Sensei reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind. "Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?"

"You won for two reasons," the Sensei answered. "First, you've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. And second, the only known defence for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm."

The boy's greatest weakness had become his greatest strength.

The moral of the story – We sometimes allow our weaknesses to be our downfall rather than using them to our advantage. We tell ourselves we cannot do something because we do not feel it is our strength. But, if we didn't dwell on our weaknesses, we may find that we could succeed. The story reminds me of the quote by Thomas Edison, "Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." We tend to give up rather than persevere. We all need to be reminded that sometimes what we perceive as our weakness could actually turn out to be our strength.

Taking 10-15 minutes to plan your entire week ahead - it does wonders for your productivity.

Rather than have a to-do list that's changing everyday, take all the things you need to do for the week and divide them separately.

That's key.
Divide them separately by days.

You can do this via sheets in Microsoft Excel.

You can do this with sheets of paper in a spiral notebook

You can do this with separate pieces of paper.

However you do it, divide it by days.

It doesn't sound all that earth shattering but try it.

It will give you a new sense of peace of mind and allow you to get a whole lot done.

Don’t Just Hope ….Decide!!

While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport in Portland, Oregon, I had one of those life-changing experiences that you hear other people talk about — the kind that sneaks up on you unexpectedly. This one occurred a mere two feet away from me.Straining to locate my friend among the passengers deplaning through the jet way, I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family.First he motioned to his youngest son (maybe six years old) as he laid down his bags. They gave each other a long, loving hug. As they separated enough to look in each other’s face, I heard the father say, “It’s so good to see you, son. I missed you so much!” His son smiled somewhat shyly, averted his eyes and replied softly, “Me, too, Dad!”

Then the man stood up, gazed in the eyes of his oldest son (maybe nine or ten) and while cupping his son’s face in his hands said, “You’re already quite the young man. I love you very much, Zach!” They too hugged a most loving, tender hug.While this was happening, a baby girl (perhaps one or one-and-a-half) was squirming excitedly in her mother’s arms, never once taking her little eyes off the wonderful sight of her returning father. The man said, “Hi, baby girl!” as he gently took the child from her mother. He quickly kissed her face all over and then held her close to his chest while rocking her from side to side. The little girl instantly relaxed and simply laid her head on his shoulder, motionless in pure contentment.After several moments, he handed his daughter to his oldest son and declared, “I’ve saved the best for last!” and proceeded to give his wife the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. He gazed into her eyes for several seconds and then silently mouthed. “I love you so much!” They stared at each other’s eyes, beaming big smiles at one another, while holding both hands.

For an instant they reminded me of newlyweds, but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn’t possibly be. I puzzled about it for a moment then realized how totally engrossed I was in the wonderful display of unconditional love not more than an arm’s length away from me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I was invading something sacred, but was amazed to hear my own voice nervously ask, “Wow! How long have you two been married?“Been together fourteen years total, married twelve of those.” he replied, without breaking his gaze from his lovely wife’s face. “Well then, how long have you been away?” I asked. The man finally turned and looked at me, still beaming his joyous smile. “Two whole days!”

Two days? I was stunned. By the intensity of the greeting, I had assumed he’d been gone for at least several weeks - if not months. I know my expression betrayed me.I said almost offhandedly, hoping to end my intrusion with some semblance of grace (and to get back to searching for my friend), “I hope my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years!”The man suddenly stopped smiling.

He looked me straight in the eye, and with forcefulness that burned right into my soul, he told me something that left me a different person. He told me, “Don’t hope, friend… decide!” Then he flashed me his wonderful smile again, shook my hand and said, “God bless! Take care!!”
Anything that we hope for in our life is actually what we need to decide upon & work on it , instead of just hoping & praying for it to happen. Hope is just the first step, but it’s the action / decision to make the hope come true, which makes the all the difference!!

What does being nice have to do with low self-confidence? A lot! Saying yes when we want to say no could indicate that we don't think our feelings are important and that we are more afraid of hurting someone's feelings than defending our own interests. "No" is a small word with a lot of power.

Worth a Read!! -- RUN THROUGH THE RAIN BELIEVING

I listen. That's where my stories come from. I speak. That's how I get to meet the most incredible people.
But sometimes just listening from afar is enough to fill my heart. I don't always need to say hello to bring a perfect stranger into my life. Conversations overheard are lessons in life sometimes even more powerful than those we are a part of. This brief encounter filled my day to capacity. If only they knew the gift they gave me. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful brown haired, freckled faced image of innocence.
Her Mom looked like someone from the Walton's or a moment captured by Norman Rockwell. Not that she was old fashioned. Her brown hair was ear length with enough curl to appear natural. She had on a pair of tan shorts and light blue knit shirt. Her sneakers were white with a blue trim. She looked like a Mom.
It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the tops of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the Earth it has no time to flow down the spout. Drains in the nearby parking lot were filled to capacity and some were blocked so that huge puddles laked around parked cars. We all stood there under the awning and just inside the door of the Wal-Mart. We waited, some patiently, others aggravated because nature messed up their hurried day.
I am always mesmerized by rain fall. I get lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child come pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day. Her voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in.
"Mom, let's run through the rain," she said.
"What?" Mom asked.
"Let's run through the rain!" she repeated.
"No, honey. We'll wait until it slows down a bit," Mom replied.
This young child waited about another minute and repeated her statement. "Mom. Let's run through the rain."
"We'll get soaked if we do," Mom said.
"No we won't, Mom. That's not what you said this morning," the young girl said as she tugged at her Mom's arm.
"This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?"
"Don't you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said,
'If Faith can get us through this, He can get us through anything!'"
The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I swear you couldn't hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes.
Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say. Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child's life. A time when innocent trust can be nurtured so that it will bloom into faith.
"Honey, you are absolutely right. Let's run through the rain. If we get wet, well maybe we just needed washing," Mom said.
Then off they ran. We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they darted past the cars and yes through the puddles. They held their shopping bags over their heads just in case.
They got soaked. But they were followed by a few believers who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. Perhaps inspired by their faith and trust.
I want to believe that somewhere down the road in life, Mom will find herself reflecting back on moments they spent together, captured like pictures in the scrapbook of her cherished memories. Maybe when she watches proudly as her daughter graduates. Or as her Daddy walks her down the aisle on her wedding day.
She will laugh again. Her heart will beat a little faster. Her smile will tell the world they love each other. But only two people will share that precious moment when they ran through the rain believing that Faith would get them through.

Only 19 wordsI don't remember where I saw it, but the following sentence electrified me: "We cannot choose how we enter this world, but we can decide how we are going to leave it." Well put! Here's a neat exercise to do for today.Take out a piece of paper or create a new Word document and just list all the things you want in your life. Let it all out. There's no limit here. All the things you want in your life.It can be related to material things, social things, physical things, anything.
Just let it all out.Let your imagination run wild and free. It's pretty fun to do when you get into it.

After you've written the list to your heart's content, just put it away in a safe place where you won't lose it. Take a look at it one year later and I'll guarantee you will feel a chill go down your spine as you read it and see just how many of the items
on your wish list actually came true.

It doesn't sound all that convincing at first I agree. I was skeptical too.
But I did it anyway for kicks in the past and a year later - let's just say it's amazing what a sheet of paper, a pen, some time, and your imagination can do.

Try it. It can't hurt. You'll thank me a year later ;)

Law Of Opposites

Have you ever paid any attention to the idea that there are "two sides to everything?" Think of how often you have heard that.Look at your hand. It has a front and a back side. Your body has a right and a left side. The automobile or room you are in has an inside and an outside. You couldn't possibly have one without the other.

This is an orderly universe, of which you are a part. The whole universe is governed by laws.The law I am referring to today is the Law of Polarity or the Law of Opposites.

If it is a long way up to the top of a building, it must be a long way down. If it is a mile from point A to point B, it must be a mile from point B to point A. They are not only opposite, they are equal and opposite.

Everything that happens in your life today will either appear negative or positive. Keep in mind whatever happens must have a positive side to it.A large majority of the population seems to be mentally programmed to pay attention to the negative side of life and unfortunately, ignore the positive.

Make a decision right now that, regardless of what happens today, you are going to look for the positive aspect of what's happening. Remember... every cloud has a silver lining. Do this again tomorrow and the next day until it becomes a habit to see the positive in everything. You will feel better, you will be more productive, and you will have more friends.

Worth to Follow-- WE FORGET

We quickly forget the stranger whose smile lifted our spirits and helped us get through the day.

We nearly ignore the kind driver who provided us the courtesy of slowing their progress and waving us into their lane.

What would happen if we gave those moments pause? Thanked them silently? Extolled their virtues within ourselves?

Would we become more aware of other people just like them, who, let’s say, make our experience at stores more pleasant? Our phone conversations to customer service departments less stressful? Our meal at a restaurant more enjoyable?

There are so many people who are doing kind things every day. Yet, because there are also those who remind us of past disappointments, or because we are caught up in the chatter of our busy lives, we far too often fail to become an active witness to the thoughtful efforts that the every-day person puts forth.

Although it certainly would be nice if we could expect everyone to treat us with the politeness we desire, we need to recognize that every single person serving us, passing us, moving forward in the world with us; every single person, including us, has personal issues that sometimes interfere with their ability to be as positive as both we and they would prefer.

But if we make a point to NOTICE… If we take even the briefest moment to internally thank those whose attitudes are positive, encouraging, or helpful, a palpable change occurs. Like a refreshing breeze, it passes over us and wafts on to the next person, who is also in need of its restorative powers.

I want to notice. So, today, I am making a list of the many people who have used a funny quip to lighten my spirit at work. I am including those who have paused politely when I crossed the street as a pedestrian, or stood patiently while holding a door. Those who have created a television commercial that made me laugh, or written gentle stories of courage and hope. These kind souls are passing on what they are able. They are sharing the joy and thankfulness they feel today, and by doing so, are offering the same encouragement to us.

Today, I will mentally thank the world for all the little gifts I took for granted when they occurred. And, I am offering this little note as my apology for not noticing and embracing them, the moment they happened.

Tomorrow, I resolve to appreciate them AS they occur, and to pass them on to another!

This is a classic you may have read about before. You are next to a pond, and for whatever reason (okay, I forgot the reason) you need to have exactly four gallons of water in your bucket. The problem is that you have a bucket that holds exactly three gallons, and one that holds exactly five gallons, and they have no marks for lesser amounts.

A study done at the University of Toronto found that you can get a temporary brainpower boost from mashed potatoes. Specifically, those tested had a 32 percent improvement in short-term memory when tested shortly afterwards. Riddle Answer: Fill the three-gallon bucket, pour it into the five-gallon one, then fill the small one again. This time when you pour the water into the larger one, there will only be space for two more gallons (3+2 = 5), so one gallon will remain. Dump out the five-gallon bucket and pour the gallon of water into it. Now just fill the three-gallon one again and add it to the gallon in the larger bucket. You'll have exactly four gallons.

Here's is an interesting bit of news. Our friends Anilkumar and Ashwin have launched a commendable new 'GREEN' venture. They are into planting saplings. But the new concept they have launched is 'Gift a tree'.

Instead of gifting the regular bunch of flowers you can now gift a tree which is a much more enduring gift. To go with it they have a Green greeting card. The scheme is at present limited to Mysore and Bangalore cities. Their company 'Enlen' is part of the UNEP 'Billion Tree' campaign.

The human liver performs over 500 functions.

Liver Trivia

The biggest organ in our bodies, is the liver. Technically, the skin is a human's largest organ, but it's on the outside of things.

Inner Man is protected and kept ticking along by more than 500 functions performed by this multi-purpose organ. Perhaps its biggest and most onerous duty, is that of filtering out impurities and contaminants. As blood carrying the contents processed by the stomach and intestines wends its way through the liver, it's purified and returned to the body. Waste is then eliminated.

Among its many other roles, the liver produces proteins and vitamins, controls glucose, controls fat storage, regulates elements of blood clotting, aids digestion, manufactures bile, turns out hormones, renders some poisons harmless, processes drugs, and manufactures cholesterol.

The liver is also the only organ in our body, which can be partially removed, and still function at a level to keep a human healthy. In fact, the liver re-grows itself over several months, depending on how much was removed. While most organ donations are the result of someone else having died, it is now possible for relatives to donate portions of their liver to a close relative, after which their own will re-grow.

Maybe not all of them, but we should not resign; we should give it a try. Don't forget that time is a healer. And modern technology makes it easier than ever for us to reconnect.

A friendly e-mail that communicates that you would like to reconnect is just one idea. Or you could send an unexpected birthday card to the other party. Or depending on the situation, you could even make a phone call addressing the issue in positive, conciliatory words, or use friends in common to convey a message. I am sure you can think of many other ways, once you've made the decision to try. But what if it doesn't work? Then you can pat yourself on the back and be proud that you tried. And then just let go.

Fact - ALMONDS

In research at the University of Illinois-Chicago mice which had an Alzheimer's-like disease were fed almonds. After several months they were tested for memory, and did better than the mice given the usual food. They also had fewer of the abnormal brain deposits thought to underlie the disease.

According to researcher Neelima Chauhan, almonds have substances which act like cholinesterase inhibitors, drugs commonly used to treat Alzheimer's disease. The amount given the mice wasn't that large, either, the human equivalent of about a small handful of almonds daily (15 to 20 nuts). Almonds also contain calcium, magnesium, vitamin E and phytochemicals that may be good for brain health. Other studies have shown almonds to be good for heart health too, so I guess I'll keep on munching on them. ;)

One thing not discussed in the scientific literature is whether it makes a difference if they are roasted or raw. I tend to eat more raw nuts, but almonds are commonly sold roasted as well. I suspect that there isn't an important difference because the compounds that seem to be the most useful in them are not vitamins, which are more likely to be destroyed by heat.

When a first-time father cuddled his newborn son, he immediately noticed the baby's ears conspicuously standing out from his head. He expressed his concern to the nurse that some children might taunt his child, calling him names like "Dumbo." A doctor examined the baby and reassured the new dad that his son was healthy - the ears presented only a minor cosmetic problem.But the nervous father persisted. He wondered if the child might suffer psychological effects of ridicule, or if they should consider plastic surgery.The nurse assured him that it was really no problem, and he should just wait to see if the boy grows into his ears.

The father finally felt more optimistic about his child, but now he worried about his wife's reaction to those large, protruding ears. She had delivered by cesarean section, and had not yet seen the child. "She doesn't take things as easily as I do," he said to the nurse.By this time, the new mother was settled in the recovery room and ready to meet her new baby. The nurse went along with the dad to lend some support in case this inexperienced mother became upset about her baby's large ears.The infant was swaddled in a receiving blanket with his head covered for the short trip through the chilly air-conditioned corridor. The baby was placed in his mother's arms, who eased the blanket back so that she could gaze upon her child for the first time.

She took one look at her baby's face and looked to her husband and gasped, "Oh, Honey! Look! He has your ears!".No problem with Mom. She married those ears...and she loves the man to whom they are attached.

Where No Spaceship Has Dared To Go

The outcast in any group is usually a contrary character, and so it goes with planets as well as people. For Pluto, the most distant planet in the solar system, is a bit of an anomaly when compared to the rest of its distant relations.

For one thing, Pluto rotates in a direction opposite to that of most other planets. It also has a bizarre orbital pattern, and while technically the furthest planet from the sun, for the twenty years between 1979-1999, it was actually closer to the sun than Neptune.

When the modern age of astronomy was still quite young back around 1930, mistaken calculations posed the theory that there was another planet beyond Neptune and Uranus. The figures were wrong, but the theory was right. Unaware of the error, Clyde W.

Tombaugh went looking in the heavens and totally by accident, found the planetary outcast.

The name Pluto is thought to have derived from the Roman god who was lord of the underworld, since the planet is in almost eternal darkness. That darkness is literal as well as figurative, since at a distance of more than five billion kilometers, it is the only planet never visited by any king of space mission.

That is about to change. Maybe as early as 2015. For in 2006, a ship was launched at Pluto, with expectations of a nine-year journey before landing.

The word Nike comes from Greek Mythology. Nike is the goddess of victory and was often depicted as a small winged figure whom the goddess Athene carried.

On The Wings Of A Goddess

Today, those who are fleet of foot, may very well be wearing Nike (pronounced Nigh-key) shoes on their feet. But they should be wearing Nee-kehs, for that is the original pronunciation of the Greek goddess' name.

Nike, a winged figure, was used to represent triumph and victory, and is often depicted in artworks as the bringer of things like urns, jugs of wine, etc. She and her siblings are also portrayed as friends of Zeus, although the classic flying goddess appears in major works of other gods, as a companion figure.

Nike's chief claim to fame was the speed at which she could fly or run. This served as the inspiration for the modern day company's logo, taking a stylized wing that also conveyed a sense of motion and swiftness.

However, ancient worshippers frequently paid tribute to her as being associated with Athena, particularly for her role in the Battle of Marathon. It is thought that the famous statue of Athena at the Parthenon in Greece, originally showed Nike standing in the palm of Athena's hand.

Jeff Johnson, who was one of the first people to go to work for the fledgling shoe company, dreamed of the goddess presiding over athletic events of old, and from that dream came one of the best-known names in athletic shoes today.

I probably would have asked myself endlessly why I wasn't invited, building up resentment over being left out. I would have been hurt, failing to realize that such situations are common in today's hurry-up, high-tech days. Emails get lost in cyberspace and voicemail messages accidentally get erased. It's much better to be like Vicky and approach these situations head-on but nicely. It keeps negativity out of life. But what if the call reveals that the lack of communication was intentional? That would open the door for further clarification about the relationship ... and isn't that a good thing, too?

'A Leader Should Know How to Manage Failure'

(Former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam at Wharton India Economic forum , Philadelphia, March 22,2008)

Question: Could you give an example, from your own experience, of how leaders should manage failure?

Kalam: Let me tell you about my experience. In 1973 I became the project director of India's satellite launch vehicle program, commonly called the SLV-3. Our goal was to put India's "Rohini" satellite into orbit by 1980. I was given funds and human resources -- but was told clearly that by 1980 we had to launch the satellite into space. Thousands of people worked together in scientific and technical teams towards that goal.

By 1979 -- I think the month was August -- we thought we were ready. As the project director, I went to the control center for the launch. At four minutes before the satellite launch, the computer began to go through the checklist of items that needed to be checked. One minute later, the computer program put the launch on hold; the display showed that some control components were not in order. My experts -- I had four or five of them with me -- told me not to worry; they had done their calculations and there was enough reserve fuel. So I bypassed the computer, switched to manual mode, and launched the rocket. In the first stage, everything worked fine. In the second stage, a problem developed. Instead of the satellite going into orbit, the whole rocket system plunged into the Bay of Bengal. It was a big failure.

That day, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, Prof. Satish Dhawan, had called a press conference. The launch was at 7:00 am, and the press conference -- where journalists from around the world were present -- was at 7:45 am at ISRO's satellite launch range in Sriharikota [in Andhra Pradesh in southern India]. Prof. Dhawan, the leader of the organization, conducted the press conference himself. He took responsibility for the failure -- he said that the team had worked very hard, but that it needed more technological support. He assured the media that in another year, the team would definitely succeed. Now, I was the project director, and it was my failure, but instead, he took responsibility for the failure as chairman of the organization.

The next year, in July 1980, we tried again to launch the satellite -- and this time we succeeded. The whole nation was jubilant. Again, there was a press conference. Prof. Dhawan called me aside and told me, "You conduct the press conference today." I learned a very important lesson that day. When failure occurred, the leader of the organization owned that failure. When success came, he gave it to his team. The best management lesson I have learned did not come to me from reading a book; it came from that experience.

MAKING CHOICES

Joseph Henry was an American scientist who served as the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. He used to tell a rather strange story about his childhood. His grandmother, who raised him, once paid a cobbler to make him a pair of shoes.

The man measured his feet and told Joseph that he could choose between two styles: a rounded toe or a square toe. Little Joseph couldn't decide. It seemed to be such a huge decision; after all, they would become his only pair of shoes for a long time.

The cobbler allowed him to take a couple of days to make up his mind. Day after day, Joseph went into the shop, sometimes three or four times a day! Each time he looked over the cobbler's shoes and tried to decide. The round-toed shoes were more practical, but the square toes looked more fashionable. He continued to procrastinate. He wanted to make up his mind, but he just couldn't decide!

Finally, one day he went into the shop and the cobbler handed him a parcel wrapped in brown paper. His new shoes! He raced home. He tore off the wrapping and found a beautiful pair of leather shoes - one with a rounded toe and the other with a square toe.

I can learn a lesson here...a lesson about decisions: if I don't make decisions myself, others will probably make them for me. Better that I make them myself.

And if I choose poorly from time to time, that's okay, too. At least I won't have to wear shoes that don't match. Besides, I'll probably do better the next time.

The planet Venus spins opposite to the other planets in the solar system.

There's One In Every Solar System

In our system, Venus is the oddball. While Uranus and Pluto have a similar odd rotation, it is less obvious because of the angle of their axis. Venus stands out quite clearly, in its position as the second planet from the sun, and the only one that goes against the flow by rotating east to west.

This pattern of movement, known as retrograde rotation, means that the sun rises in the west, contrary to what would be seen on other planets if they could be inhabited. But how did it come about?.

The atmosphere on Venus is extremely thick, being primarily CO2, or carbon dioxide. This creates a greenhouse type of effect, which magnifies the heat of the sun and raises the surface temperature of the planet to around 930F. That, in combination with friction and tidal forces, is thought to have caused the planet to turn in the opposite direction to most planets in the solar system.

Tidal locking also causes another fluke in the relation of Venus to Earth. Similar in size and rotation, when their orbits align so that the two planets are at their closest, the exact same side of Venus shows every time. The phenomenon is a fine ballet that results from one body rotating on its own axis, at the exact same rate as it orbits the other body.

MY DIET CLUB meets every Tuesday evening. I hate dieting, so I usually eat as I please all week long and then fast on Tuesday before the dreaded weigh-in.

You Do Have A Choice

Very often we say we have no choice when what we really have is a very difficult choice.

You've no doubt heard yourself or someone else say things like "I have no choice but to work 70 hours a week" or "I have no choice but to go to this meeting."

In such situations, "I have no choice" really means "the choice is too difficult to make, so I'll pretend it doesn't exist."

Such thinking can be a trap. You can pile up one "no choice" on top of another until your life seems completely out of control.

But no matter where you are, you do have a choice about almost everything you do.

You have chosen the path to where you are right now, and you have complete control over where you are going from here.

Yes, the choices will indeed be difficult, but there's nothing to be gained by denying them.

The next time you catch yourself saying you have no choice, stop and ask yourself if that is really true.

The way to improve your life is to make the choices which will take you to where you desire to be.

Have the courage to look at those choices.

Carefully consider their implications.

Decide to take complete control and make the choices which will move your life forward.

CHOOSING CONFIDENCE

Carefully examining a display in the drugstore, a man asked the pharmacist, "Do you really guarantee this hair-restorer?"

One man quipped, "When it comes to believing in myself, I'm an agnostic." One of the greatest problems many people experience is lack of confidence. Some don't believe in their ability to speak in public, others are afraid to try something they've never done before, and still others do not have the confidence to overcome their shyness.

Do you know that you can become more confident? One effective technique is to learn to do what you're afraid to do.

I led a seminar a few years ago where I asked for three volunteers to speak to the group the next day. One young woman named Judy was the first to raise her hand. She explained to me later why she did so: "When you asked for three volunteers," Judy said, "I felt a knot of fear in my stomach. I've never done anything like this before and I've never really believed I could. But the fear was telling me something," she continued. "So...BECAUSE I felt so anxious, I decided that this was something I had to do. But I must to tell you, I'm terrified!"

She made up her mind to DO that which she was afraid to do. And the following day, Judy's five-minute talk was superb! She was honest and genuine, speaking right from her heart.

He said, "I could do it in three: Renounce and enjoy."

You renounce all worldly attachment to everything and enjoy what God gives you.

You give away what you have inside yourself, your love.

You're not concerned with whether it worked or didn't work, whether it was right or wrong, whether you won or lost.

You just constantly flow through your life without getting attached to the results.

The irony is that the less attached you are, the more you get.

The more you keep circulating, the more keeps coming back to you.

It's a flowing system.
